The Visit of the Coalmine and

the Washing and Sorting Equipment

The coalmine, such a strange and fascinating world for you to discover, as an astonishing and educational experience.
We safeguarded this genuine coalmine as a heritage of our industrial past.

 

Just seize your jacket and set your helmet straight, then reach the galleries with the

mining-cage to discover the fabulous world of the "blackrock".
Knowing all about the working conditions but fascinating life of the "Houyeux", the tough working conditions and the technical equipment underneath; the coal, the noisy machine,...

The visit lasts two hours. It starts with a video-show, which dealing with a time span beginning 300 millions years ago up to now, tells us about the fabulous history of the "black rock"..
Then, dressed with a mining helmet and a jacket, you will go down into the pit by means of the mine lift.

 

You will be shown how mining equipment was used to knock down coal and other machinery. You will hear every day life in the " Black holes ", the mineris hard working conditions difficulties and leisures.

 

The visit of the coalmine also includes the discovery of the washing and sorting equipment !
In this building you will see the complete process of the coal, from the time it is washed, sorted and finally stocked waitting to be loades and delivered.
Nothing has changes since the closing of the coalmine in 1980, not even the lamps which continuously lignt the patron saint of miners : Saint Barbe !


PRACTICE INFORMATIONS :

Visits are conducted alternately in French and in Dutch; upon request they can be done in English, German, Italian, Spanish, and Polish.
The underground tour has been adapted to provide an easy visit.
The only " difficulty " are two stairs to go down.
Furthermore, the visit is possible with a rollingchair upon earlier demand and with an adaptation of the tour.
The mine is accessible at all age. Animals are forbidden.
Temperatur downstairs is about 15 degrees.
